For some reason lately, the posts have been fewer and farther in-between.  I think I may have come up with some ideas or theories on why that may be so.  It is not that I don’t have much going on that is not deep and reflective nor is it that I don’t wish to share.  The internal workings of myself have been on overdrive.  I think more deeply and profoundly.  I feel even great than I have before.  I deal with much more than I may seem to.  The reflective bit of me is here just much as it ever was and just as willing to share as it ever has been.  What is the way I work is that I need to be comfortable in what I share and ready to put it into words that reach out, share, yet keep in private what must be kept as so.  Religious life pushes one in a way they have never really been pushed.  I can make al the comparisons in the world and such, but nothing with be like this, or even like what my past experiences have been, though they do play off of each other.

Give Me Your Eyes

I would like to share with you one of my favorite songs, and yes there are many.  This is “Give Me Your Eyes” by Brandon Heath.  Looking for the lyrics, I stumbled upon the story behind the song…

“I wrote a lot of songs for this new record. ‘Give Me Your Eyes’ was one of the first that really stuck out. I co-wrote it with Jason Ingram, and musically, it has a hip-hop flavor to it. The song was inspired from the idea that every once in a while, God gives us His eyes. You tend to see a lot of different kinds of people in places like airports. Sometimes, usually only for a few moments, I feel like God gives me true compassion for those people around me. I think that the longer I get to know the character of Jesus, the more compassion I personally have for others. ‘Give Me Your Eyes’ is saying; ‘Jesus give me your eyes so that I can see people the way you see people, so I can love people the way you love people.’ One of the core goals of my ministry is focused on striking up conversations about social injustices around the world and being a voice for those who have often been silenced by poverty or lack of influence. I want to challenge people more. ‘Give Me Your Eyes’ does that. It is one thing to have compassion and quite another to act on it. Most times, it starts with the people around you.”  Brandon Heath

Now that you have read the story, let the song really talk to you.  What does it mean to you personally?  What things come to mind?  Focus on the video, close your eyes and listen, or do both (of course, needing to listen to it twice might be the case).

Now that you have listened to it and have some thoughts and feelings running through your mind, here are the lyrics.  Some people like to see the words.  It definitely helps with memory.

Look down from a broken sky
Traced out by the city lights
My world from a mile high
Best seat in the house tonight

Touch down on the cold black top
Hold on for the sudden stop
Breath in the familiar shock
Of confusion and chaos

All those people going somewhere
Why have I never cared

Give me your eyes for just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me your love for humanity
Give me your arms for the broken hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me you heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

Step out on a busy street
See a girl and our eyes meet
Does her best to smile at me
To hide what’s underneath

There’s a man just to her right
Black suit and a bright red tie
To ashamed to tell his wife
He’s out of work, he’s buying time

Pre Chorus / Chorus

I’ve been here a million times
A couple of million eyes
Just move and pass me by
I swear I never thought that I was wrong
I need a second glance
Give me a second chance
To see the way you’ve seen the people all along

There are times we do see what God sees.  Do we help?  Do we pass on by?  Other times we don’t even notice the people around us.  We are so enveloped in our own world, we can forget the world around us.

As I continue in my discernment process, I pray for many things.  Strength and understanding are among the top.  Knowing God’s plan for me I believe tops it all.  Another thing I have come to hope for is that I will see things around me and react in a way that God would want me to react.  Of course we can not reach everyone, nor do we all have the talents for everything.

I have worked at a Girl Scout camp before, approximately four summers.  Kids appear to be who I want to work for.  I love retreat work, started with TEC Retreats.  Supposedly the retreat world is where I am to be.  Applying to enter formation for religious life (and hoping they accept me, that God accepts me too) is my step to hopefully be the hands, feet, and heart of Jesus to the world.

I like this one particular line from what Brandon Heath says when talking about this song.  It is a prayer we should all say.  So I will leave you with these questions, the song with lyrics, thoughts of the artist’s as well as mine, and this little prayer taken from above.

Jesus give me your eyes so that I can see people the way you see people, so I can love people the way you love people.  Amen
