The Woodcarver

In my spiritual reading, I came across a poem that the author uses.  It was used as an example of what he has done in a “circle of trust.”  It provides a third party from the facilitator and the members, so as to give them something to base conversation and relating too.  This is taken from the book called “A Hidden Wholeness,” by Parker J. Palmer.  The poem comes from the teachings of Chuang Tzu.

The Woodcarver

Khing, the master carver, made a bell stand

Of precious wood.  When it was finished,

All who saw it were astounded.  They said it must be

The work of spirits.

The Prince of Lu said to the master carver:

“What is your secret?”

Khing replied: “I am only a workman:

I have no secret.  There is only this:

When I began to think about the work you commanded

I guarded my spirit, did not expend it

On trifles, that were not to the point.

I fasted in order to set

My heart at rest.

After three days fasting,

I had forgotten gain and success.

After five days

I had forgotten praise or criticism.

After seven days

I had forgotten my body

With all its limbs.

“By this time all thought of your Highness

And of the court had faded away.

All that might distract me from the work

Had vanished.

I was collected in the single thought

Of the bell stand.

“Then I went to the forest

To see the trees in their own natural state.

When the right tree appeared before my eyes,

The bell stand also appeared in it, clearly, beyond doubt.

All I had to do was to put forth my hand

And begin.

“If I had not met this particular tree

There would have been

No bell stand at all.

“What happened?

My own collected thought

Encountered the hidden potential in the wood;

From this live encounter came the work

Which you ascribe to the spirits.”

There is something about the devotion that the woodcarver puts into his work.  We need to let go of everything so that the work we do is not influenced by the external commands and is more responsive to the inner teacher.  The inner teacher is guided by the Spirit.  It allows us to live in closer conformity to our very own souls.  I want to take some more time to reflect on it.  Share your thoughts and let us have conversation!

A Rose-Filled Response

The day after my novena to Saint Therese ended, I started to write some more.  In my writing, my hand just moved across my paper.  I am still not sure what to make of what I wrote.  Initially I was just going to let it go and not post it especially since  I was not sure what to make of it.  Rather, I have decided that I will share it with you all.  If you do not know to what I referring, check out my post about a goon full of roses and you will hear all about my Saint Therese experience.

Are you now able to see

The love that comes from me

You had a prayer in your heart

Form me you wish not to part

So to Therese you did pray

A novena that here you will stay

Clarity to be sure you heard right

That all is worth the fight

So my beloved, I had her send

A shower of roses with no end

Those nine days you gave in devotion

I know leaves still much emotion

But I hope you understand

It all came from my own hand

You are filled with fear

To you it is not all clear

I also see deep within you

Something I have desired you do

This yearning you feel in the soul

For what will make you full

It is as you feel, blessedly great

Patience you will need in the wait

This will not be a breeze

Sometimes you will surely freeze

Do not let yourself be defeated

Even when Satan attacks so heated

Remember the signs I have given

Strive for eternity in heaven

Over you I am always watching

Loving you my child, I am rejoicing

Take from it what you will.  It is a reminder of me to just trust everything is going to turn out how it should turn out.  Take this for what you will and thanks for reading.

Entering into Communion with Christ Through Mary

Tonight was our medal ceremony, it was amazing!  We sang and it was great.  Here are some poems to express what is in me.

—–

The butterflies were fluttering everywhere

Pacing were our feet this way and that

Preperations of last minute to be done

Prayers that prayer is to go smooth sailing

Time finally arrived that which was here

A moment of which we have waited for

Before we know it all became a blur of time

Songs were sung with such great gusto

Readings read with passion deep within

Symbol of our devotion blessed indeed

Hang now around our necks proudly

Moment passes by and hugs are passed

Smiles now shine brightly from our faces

And the butterflies fly free once again

—–

In all those moments past

Move on I have now done

Mary hangs around my neck

Blessed that she always is

Joy runs through my blood

Smile beams across my face

Heart pounds out of my chest

I want to dance for the Lord

Sing out with all my being

Oh what love could beat this

That which God has given

Shared passion with the world

Tears of happiness fall

Feelings of greatness fill me

Stay is will I pray it so

This life to live all the days

With a future that is bright
