Born Again: Getting Goofy

Wednesday, God sent me some reminders that I needed to hear.  Being home is hard; it is challenging me a lot more than usual.  This time though, I am more well equipped to deal with those inner challenges.  The first of the reminders I spoke about in my last post.

As I had mentioned in the previous post, I was out with my friend Nicole.  As we don’t see each often, we were catching up on life and things important to us.  When I was speaking of how hard this past year of formation was, as well as how I know I have grown, she mentioned something or how she thinks I am in the right place.

Later that evening when we were both online, we were just chatting.  This is how part of the conversation went.

ME: I am curious, why do you think I am in the right spot? (of course I would ask no surprise)

NICOLE: because you love it, and you can’t deny it, because you get that goofy look in your eyes every time you talk about what you’ve been doing

ME: Seriously?

NICOLE: yeah, like have you ever talked to people and you can just tell they LOVE it? i don’t know exactly how to explain it

If only I could describe how much better that made me feel.  To have someone see that in me that knows me more than anyone else is wonderful. I am blessed with wonderful friends.

As I was sitting there typing, I again put my iPod on shuffle and this is what came up.

Today I found myself
After searching all these years
And the man that I saw, he wasn’t at all who I thought he’d be
I was lost when you found me here
And I was broken beyond repair
Then you came along and you sang your song over me

It feels like I’m born again
It feels like I’m living
For the very first time
For the very first time
In my life

Make a promise to me now
Reassure my heart somehow
That the love that I feel is so much more real than anything
I’ve a feeling in my soul
And I pray that I’m not wrong
That the life I have now, it is only the beginning

It feels like I’m born again
It feels like I’m living
For the very first time
For the very first time
It feels like I’m breathing
It feels like I’m moving
For the very first time
For the very first time

I wasn’t looking for something that was more
Than what I had yesterday
Then you came to me and you gave to me
Life and a love that I’ve never known
That I’ve never felt before

It feels like I’m born again
It feels like I’m living
For the very first time
I’m living for the first time
It feels like I’m breathing
It feels like I’m moving
For the very first time
I’m living for the first time
In my life

This is what people have seen in me through all the challenges and growth of this year.  What an inspiration song that came on “random” and fits so well to what Nicole was telling me.  It really has given me something to think about.  God has sent me some reminders that I need to hear, and hear again.

Give Me Your Eyes

I would like to share with you one of my favorite songs, and yes there are many.  This is “Give Me Your Eyes” by Brandon Heath.  Looking for the lyrics, I stumbled upon the story behind the song…

“I wrote a lot of songs for this new record. ‘Give Me Your Eyes’ was one of the first that really stuck out. I co-wrote it with Jason Ingram, and musically, it has a hip-hop flavor to it. The song was inspired from the idea that every once in a while, God gives us His eyes. You tend to see a lot of different kinds of people in places like airports. Sometimes, usually only for a few moments, I feel like God gives me true compassion for those people around me. I think that the longer I get to know the character of Jesus, the more compassion I personally have for others. ‘Give Me Your Eyes’ is saying; ‘Jesus give me your eyes so that I can see people the way you see people, so I can love people the way you love people.’ One of the core goals of my ministry is focused on striking up conversations about social injustices around the world and being a voice for those who have often been silenced by poverty or lack of influence. I want to challenge people more. ‘Give Me Your Eyes’ does that. It is one thing to have compassion and quite another to act on it. Most times, it starts with the people around you.”  Brandon Heath

Now that you have read the story, let the song really talk to you.  What does it mean to you personally?  What things come to mind?  Focus on the video, close your eyes and listen, or do both (of course, needing to listen to it twice might be the case).

Now that you have listened to it and have some thoughts and feelings running through your mind, here are the lyrics.  Some people like to see the words.  It definitely helps with memory.

Look down from a broken sky
Traced out by the city lights
My world from a mile high
Best seat in the house tonight

Touch down on the cold black top
Hold on for the sudden stop
Breath in the familiar shock
Of confusion and chaos

All those people going somewhere
Why have I never cared

Give me your eyes for just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me your love for humanity
Give me your arms for the broken hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me you heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

Step out on a busy street
See a girl and our eyes meet
Does her best to smile at me
To hide what’s underneath

There’s a man just to her right
Black suit and a bright red tie
To ashamed to tell his wife
He’s out of work, he’s buying time

Pre Chorus / Chorus

I’ve been here a million times
A couple of million eyes
Just move and pass me by
I swear I never thought that I was wrong
I need a second glance
Give me a second chance
To see the way you’ve seen the people all along

There are times we do see what God sees.  Do we help?  Do we pass on by?  Other times we don’t even notice the people around us.  We are so enveloped in our own world, we can forget the world around us.

As I continue in my discernment process, I pray for many things.  Strength and understanding are among the top.  Knowing God’s plan for me I believe tops it all.  Another thing I have come to hope for is that I will see things around me and react in a way that God would want me to react.  Of course we can not reach everyone, nor do we all have the talents for everything.

I have worked at a Girl Scout camp before, approximately four summers.  Kids appear to be who I want to work for.  I love retreat work, started with TEC Retreats.  Supposedly the retreat world is where I am to be.  Applying to enter formation for religious life (and hoping they accept me, that God accepts me too) is my step to hopefully be the hands, feet, and heart of Jesus to the world.

I like this one particular line from what Brandon Heath says when talking about this song.  It is a prayer we should all say.  So I will leave you with these questions, the song with lyrics, thoughts of the artist’s as well as mine, and this little prayer taken from above.

Jesus give me your eyes so that I can see people the way you see people, so I can love people the way you love people.  Amen
